Large Antique Art Deco hand painted French vase, Louis Fontinelle Marines, c1930

  

The vase has crackle crazing all over which shows more clearly in the lighter patches. This is typical of Fontinelle's work. Very large Art Deco period polychrome earthenware vase decorated with stylized flowers, signed L. Fontinelle" at the bottom and marked under the base "Marines-506-France. Louis Fontinelle (1886/1964) established his workshop in 1927 in Marines, France, when he was already an experienced ceramicist.

Although it was only a small studio, Fontinelles made items for: the Bon Marché, the BHV, the Samaritaine, the Nouvelles Galeries, the Galeries Lafayette, and the Magasins du Louvre, His work included crackled glazed work and other earthenware.
