ART DECO LIMOGES FRENCH PORCELAIN HARLEQUIN PERFUME LAMP RARE CHARLES SERPAUT 1920. Charles Serpaut - Limoges, France Early 1900s Wonderful and Whimsical RARE.

Art Deco Harlequin Lamp from the Commedia dell'Arte. This lovely piece of artwork c1920's depicts the character of the Harlequin by his chequered costume and graceful movement.

His role is that of a light-hearted, nimble, and astute servant, often acting to thwart the plans of his master, and pursuing his own love interest, Columbina, with wit and resourcefulness, often competing with the sterner and melancholic Pierrot. He later develops into a prototype of the romantic hero. Harlequin inherits his physical agility and his trickster qualities, as well as his name, from a mischievous "devil" character in medieval passion plays. This wonderful Limoges maker rarely comes up for sale, Charles Serpaut, late 1920s.

Gorgeous gilding - real gold, likely 24K. 9 1/4"L x 11"H. Condition: Excellent antique condition, minor wear and paint loss, two prong European plug.

The description is based on our combined knowledge, experience, and research. Statements regarding maker, age, origin, etc. Please ask questions that will help you in these evaluations.

The Harlequin character first appeared in England early in the 17th century and took centre stage in the derived genre of the Harlequinade, developed in the early 18th century by John Rich. [4] As the Harlequinade portion of English dramatic genre pantomime developed, Harlequin was routinely paired with the character Clown. As developed by Joseph Grimaldi around 1800, Clown became the mischievous and brutish foil for the more sophisticated Harlequin, who became more of a romantic character. The most influential such in Victorian England were William Payne and his sons the Payne Brothers, the latter active during the 1860s and 1870s. Items were not perfect when produced. Quality control was not a factor in the 1800s or early 1900s.

These items are antiques and collectables and show signs of wear and use as you would expect to find from daily usage. Please review photos for a determination of condition also. They are far too difficult, costly and time consuming to pack. I never charge for packing materials or for my time for packing (which is considerable when packing antique lamps & china). I have many years experience in sending fragile goods through the post and take pride in my packing, my treasures arrive in the same condition they left me.

Thank you for your consideration. Just about every lamp and/or lighting fixture that I sell at one time has been in use, they were manufactured for use in extreme conditions and subject to heavy use, these lights have survived!

They have already proven their ability to stand the test of time...... This is a measure you simply will not find in ANY new light fixture made today. The originals of what others copy today.

Vintage light fixtures increase in value as the supply is diminished. This is a rare and collectible piece of French lighting history.

Very few have survived these past 100 plus years. Both collectors and decorators will find this beauty very desirable and an excellent antique investment. Please use the photos to make your final decision.
